Job Title:              Village Community Shop Manager

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an individual with retail experience to be the manager of the Lodsworth Larder, an eco-friendly community shop selling everyday essentials, newspapers, and local produce.

Lodsworth Larder is an award-winning, community owned and run village store in the heart of West Sussex. Built and opened 10 years ago, the Larder has become the hub of this beautiful and friendly village and serves the immediate area, tourists and wider community.  It has a strong national reputation as a model community store, with its purpose-built cosy building, constructed of sustainable timber and designed with environmental, energy-saving principles, and it stocks a wide range of high quality, local produce. All profits generated are reinvested in the business to ensure it continues to serve the community in the future.

Supported by a team of volunteers, this role provides an exciting opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic, experienced retail individual. The shop manager reports to the Chairman of the Management Committee.

The Role:

  • Manage day to day operation of the Larder
  • Oversee selling and customer service activities
  • Manage all aspects of customer service including queries and complaints
  • Manage costs and factors affecting the profitable performance of the Larder
  • Recruit, manage, motivate and develop staff including a team of volunteers
  • Maintain strong relationships and communications with the Management Committee
  • Ensure regular reporting to the Committee
  • Manage and maintain stock to ensure maximum availability and minimum wastage
  • Maintain good relationships with suppliers, and be open to trialling new products, particularly from local producers
  • Continue to drive our environmental agenda, reducing plastic waste and encouraging recycling
  • Communicate with external agencies as necessary e.g. environmental health etc.
  • Plan and implement promotional strategies
  • Supervise and be responsible for quarterly stock taking
  • Manage cash and payments system
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the Larder

This is a permanent position. Either a full-time role of 35 hours per week or a job share for 2 people. Working alternate weekends will be required. The Larder is open Mon – Fri 8am to 6pm, Sat 8am to 5pm, Sun 8.30am to 12.30pm.

Person Specification:

  • Experience of retail including purchasing, supplier negotiation, stock control
  • Experience of supplier management
  • Honed relationship building skills and practice of dealing with customers on a one to one basis
  • A strong interest in community enterprises, sustainability and local produce
  • Knowledge of food safety, hygiene and food labelling
  • Self-motivated, with a great attention to detail
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proven organisational and forward planning skills
  • IT literacy and analytical ability
